CAF Status in Training: What Rights, Benefits, and Administrative Procedures to Know?

When entering vocational training, the first question rarely concerns the course content. It’s more about: will my CAF benefits be maintained, reduced, or eliminated? The status of being a vocational training intern changes the game for RSA, the activity bonus, and housing assistance, with rules varying according to the remuneration received and the type of training undertaken.

Net social or taxable net: the declaration error that costs dearly in training

It is often thought that it is enough to declare what is received in the bank account. In reality, the Caf requires different calculation bases depending on the benefit concerned.

For the activity bonus, it is the net social that serves as the declaration base. For the AAH, it is the taxable net. These two amounts do not correspond to the net amount you actually receive. The Caf of Pyrénées-Atlantiques even published a specific reminder on this point in September 2026, as errors are frequent.

In paid training or apprenticeship, this distinction becomes even more important. The internship remuneration paid by the Region, the France Travail allowance, or the apprenticeship salary does not appear the same way on the pay slips. Always check the “net social” line on your payslip or certificate before filling out your quarterly declaration. You can learn more on Job Emploi to distinguish the different statuses and their impacts on your rights.

Activity bonus in training: who can actually receive it?

The activity bonus is not automatically eliminated when entering training. It all depends on the nature of the remuneration received during this period.

If you are an employee and your employer continues to pay you during the training (for example, a skills development plan), your income remains classified as a salary. The activity bonus is then maintained under the same conditions as before.

In apprenticeship or work-study programs, the employment contract generates a salary. This salary is considered as a regular income. The Caf includes it in the calculation, and the bonus may be paid if the resource conditions are met.

Situations where the activity bonus is not granted mainly concern remunerations that are not classified as a salary. This is the case for certain allowances paid directly by the Regions to vocational training interns, or for specific solidarity allowances. Feedback on this point varies according to the departmental Caf, as the assessment of the “salary” nature of training remuneration may differ.

RSA and housing assistance: what changes during training

The RSA operates on a quarterly resource logic. When entering training, the remuneration received (AREF, internship remuneration) is declared and modifies the RSA amount. All training remuneration must be declared, even if it is low.

For housing assistance (APL, ALS, ALF), the calculation is based on the total resources of the household. A change in professional situation, such as entering training, must be reported to the Caf. The Caf then recalculates your rights taking into account your new income.

Specifically, here is the information to provide as soon as you enter training:

  • The type of training undertaken and its expected duration, as the Caf distinguishes between paid training and unpaid training to assess your rights
  • The amount and source of your remuneration (France Travail, Region, employer), specifying whether it is a maintained salary or an allowance
  • Any change in family or housing situation that occurs in parallel, as these elements also modify the calculation of assistance

Quarterly declaration in training: the calendar not to miss

The quarterly resource declaration conditions the payment of the RSA and the activity bonus. In training, it is easy to forget this deadline, especially when income changes from month to month.

A delay or omission in declaration leads to the suspension of payments. The Caf does not provide assistance until the declaration is made. And if the information provided turns out to be inaccurate, an overpayment may be claimed.

As of October 1, 2026, a change specifically concerns workers in ESAT benefiting from the AAH: they will have to declare their resources themselves every three months. Those who also receive the activity bonus will need to make two separate declarations, with potentially different reference periods and calendars. This reform of the pre-filled declaration creates a double process that needs to be anticipated.

Caf digital support: workshops to avoid blockages

Correctly filling out the quarterly declaration when in training, identifying the correct amounts to report, understanding the difference between net social and taxable net: all of this can be tricky, especially for those who are not comfortable with digital tools.

The Caf of Yvelines offers support workshops specifically dedicated to the quarterly declarations of RSA and the activity bonus. These sessions allow you to learn how to:

  • Identify the income to declare according to each benefit, distinguishing salary, allowance, and training remuneration
  • Use the Caf application to make declarations without errors and on time
  • Check that your file is complete, especially after a change in situation related to entering training

This type of support is developing in several departments. Inquire with your local Caf to find out if similar workshops exist near you.

The status of being a training intern remains an administrative gray area that requires diligence. Rights exist, but they depend on precise declarations, made on time, with the correct amounts. An up-to-date file remains the best guarantee to avoid finding oneself without payment in the middle of a training course.
